Physics in everyday life: technology

From the concepts introduced by Max Planck, many technologies present in our everyday life could arise. Computers, cell phones and even the Internet only exist thanks to Modern Physics and the “father of quantum physics”. Understand a little better.

The beginning of everything

Based on Robert Kirchhoff’s studies, Max Planck tried to find a way to explain the phenomenon resulting from the intensity of radiation emitted by the blackbody, something hitherto unexplained using the concepts of “classical physics”.

Planck formulated an equation that defined the energy of the radiation by introducing a constant (h), later called Planck’s constant. The contribution of physicists who studied the same problem (Einstein, J.J.Thomson, Bohr, among others) resulted in the formulation of new fundamental concepts for the birth of quantum physics. From these concepts it was possible to develop the technology of modern devices like computers, magnetic resonance machine and many other electronic devices.

Modern Physics and Technology

Other applications of Modern Physics in today’s technology have allowed the creation of devices such as:

1) Barcode scanner – made from an emitting photodiode and a receiver photodiode arranged face to face, it captures variations of incident light when the code is manually moved between these two components. Then the device converts the data from the binary system to a corresponding decimal.

2) Nanotechnology – many devices that use this technology, such as cell phones and computers, obey the laws of quantum mechanics. A property called “overexposure of quantum states”, for example, allowed a greater advance in the processing speed of computers.

3) Laser – Two American physicists who worked with microwave amplification have sought to find a way to amplify visible light since it is an electromagnetic radiation. Using an optical medium equipped with mirrors they were able to amplify the light through the stimulated emission of radiation by multiple reflections. (Light amplification by stimulated emission radiation).
