Safety in the lab
Experimental classes are always full of excitement, but working in a physics or chemistry lab requires special care. It is essential that the person in charge keeps the authority and advises the students about some basic rules of safety and attitudes that may represent danger to the class. In order for the class to be productive and occur without any incident, we separate some items that deserve more attention.
Behavior
Probably all the students already know, but still it is important that the teacher remembers that the laboratory is not a place for jokes, but a place of work. Although the experimental class allows for greater interaction and creativity, all activities must be carried out according to the teacher’s guidelines.
Clothing
Each technical school or university may have specific rules about student clothing, some of which require the use of the closed coats. However, even in institutions with no defined rules, it is recommended that long hair be stuck and in the laboratory environment students do not wear scarves, long necklaces or wristbands, as these accessories can screw into the equipment at the time of the experiment, causing accidents.
Organization
In order to have a safe and productive class, tou must direct your students to keep the workbench clean and organized, always setting the activities in the center of the table and never on the edges. After finishing the experiment, the tables and materials should be clean and tidy.
Substances
With so many chemicals nearby, the risk of accidents is great, so it is essential that everyone is aware of the care they need to handle each substance. Reading the product labels that will be used in class is always a good idea!
Materials
The teacher should also be alert and alert students about the handling of laboratory materials and equipment. For example, whenever the students use electric machines, hands must be dry to avoid shocks. They also must take care while heating a test tube: it is necessary to tilt it slightly and always use a wooden tweezer, being careful not to point the open end to yourself or to a colleague, because the product may spill and cause burns.
The purpose of the experimental class is to motivate students and facilitate learning, but for this to happen following some basic rules is fundamental. After all, safety in the laboratory depends on everyone!
