Thermology is na area of physics responsable for studying heat and its effects on matter. Thermology studies are devoted to understanding heat-related manifestations, such as heating or cooling, or even changes in physicial state of matter, when it receives or loses heat. How can heat be exchanged among bodies? What are the characteristics of each heat exchanged process?

  • Convection;
  • Irradiation;
  • Conduction.

Heat

It is the energy that migrates from a body with higher temperature to another with lower temperature – thermal energy in transit.

Temperature

It is a magnitude that measures the degree of agitation of molecules. The hotter a mtter is, the more agitated its molecules will be – the temperature will determine if the matter is hot or cold.

Thermal equilibrium

It is the state in which two bodies are with the same temperature. So, when a body is in thermal equilibrium in relation to another, the heat exchange between them stops. Example: When a glass of ice-cold water is left for some time on a table, it will heat until being in thermal equilibrium with the environment.

Thermology in everyday life

Thermology study allows us to understand many phenomena that occur in everyday life, such as dilation and contraction of materials, as well as to understand why they happen and how they happen.
